NB bylaw snuffs out public smoking

FREDERICTON -- Public smoking takes its last gasp in Fredericton today as the city prepares to implement a bylaw preventing smoking in all indoor public places.

The bylaw, which the city introduced last fall, comes into effect on July 1st.

The bylaw has been applauded by many non-smokers in the city and anti-tobacco advocates.

However, many business owners and smokers have said the law is oppressive, and tramples their rights.

One business, Dolan's Pub, even tried to block the ban by arguing in court that the province doesn't give the city enough jurisdiction to force businesses to go smoke-free.

That argument was struck down last week.
