Study coughs up truth about smoking
3 June 2005, Swissinfo
A study has found that nearly a third of all Swiss smokers over 40 years of age suffer from the fatal lung disease, COPD - twice as many as previously thought.
BaselUniversityHospital , which carried out the research, estimates that as many as 450,000 people in the country have the disease.
Of the 25,000 smokers examined, 28 per cent were found to be suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which covers smoking-related conditions such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
