Winnipeg smoking ban takes effect

Canadian Press
Tuesday, July 01, 2003

A ban on smoking in all enclosed public places takes effect in Winnipeg July 1.

But the anti-smoking bylaw won't be enforced during a two-month grace period.

Instead, the province will run a $50,000 awareness campaign through July and August and start issuing fines September 1.

In the meantime, some bars have chosen to conduct their own enforcement.

The president of the Royal Canadian Legion St. James branch says his members had better get used to sucking smoke-free air.

Eric Murphy says they'll operate strictly by the law, and anyone caught smoking will be asked to leave.
