The Lung Association of Saskatchewan along with Triple Four Advertising Ltd. and the Saskatchewan Roughriders are excited to announce Mrs. Christina Johns’ Grade 3/4 class from Walker School in Regina, SK as the 2013 Fine Foods Community Youth Challenge Winners!

Saskatoon, May 23, 2013 - From February to May, Neal Hughes, Scott McHenry and Keith Shologan from the Saskatchewan Roughriders visited over 60 Saskatchewan schools to talk to youth about having a game plan in order to defend against negative peer pressure.  The presentations touched close to home, as the Riders found ways to relate to the youth and talk about times that they themselves were faced with negative peer pressure and how they overcame these obstacles.  After the presentations, students were encouraged to exercise their lungs for this year’s Fine Foods Community Youth Challenge. The youth had one week to track the time they spent exercising their lungs.  This year, 782 students took part in the challenge and together they completed 9,099 hours of exercise.  All participating classrooms received vouchers that can be redeemed for tickets to a 2013 Roughrider home game, and classroom resources from The Lung Association.

The grand prize winners and the classroom who exercised their lungs the most was Mrs. Christina Johns’ Grade 3/4 class from Walker School in Regina.  Johns said that “the students were super pumped when Neal Hughes from the Roughriders came to talk to them.” The entire school took part in the challenge and students ran laps around their school every day for a week after their Roughrider visit.  Many of the students even came to school early arriving at 8:00 am to get their extra laps recorded.

On Thursday, May 23, 2013, we invite all media outlets to attend the grand prize winning lunch with Christina Johns’ Grade 3/4 classroom at Walker School, 5637 7th Avenue Regina, SK from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm.  Neal Hughes, Scott McHenry and Keith Shologan from the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Christina Johns’ from Walker school and Jill Hubick, Health Promotion Coordinator from The Lung Association will be available for interviews.
