When you can’t breathe, nothing else matters. That’s why two of Saskatchewan’s leading health research funding organizations are looking to the future with a long-term investment of $1 million over five years.

Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF) and The Lung Association, Saskatchewan (LAS) have built a strong relationship over the years with a common objective of supporting health research in Saskatchewan.

This new investment will be dedicated to furthering health research in the areas of Indigenous people’s health, respiratory disease control and management, patient-caregiver education, cannabis, sleep apnea and other areas related to lung health.

“This partnership between Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation and The Lung Association, Saskatchewan is a continued example of collaboration to address the health challenges that the people of our province face,” says Dr. Donna Goodridge, Director of the Respiratory Research Centre. “The research talent that exists in this province will be able to take advantage of this investment and drive innovative solutions forward for healthier breathing across Saskatchewan.”

“That breath you just took, that is a gift. For many people they can only dream of breathing easily. Respiratory research is crucial to improving the quality of life and wellbeing for people living with lung disease, including myself” says Jennalee Brewer, double lung transplant recipient and cystic fibrosis patient. “Every piece of research gives hope that we are getting closer to ending lung disease.”

“We cannot accomplish our goals when we work in silos,” says SHRF CEO, Patrick Odnokon. “We have found a truly authentic, values-based partnership in working with The Lung Association, Saskatchewan, and together we are aligning our strengths to build our provincial capacity for research that will have an impact on the health of Saskatchewan people.”

“The Lung Association as Saskatchewan’s oldest health charity has led research and evaluation studies into all aspects of respiratory health care for decades. Providing funding to Saskatchewan researchers who are undertaking research in respiratory health is a priority for our organization. Together, with SHRF we are now able to increase our research capacity and work with a partner who truly understands the value and impact of research on our health care systems. Ultimately, those living with lung disease in our province will benefit the most” says LAS President & CEO, Susan Cron.
