Winnipeg City Council Votes For All-Out Butt Ban
Wednesday, March 26, 2003
Winnipeg city council has voted to ban smoking in all indoor public spaces by the summer.
Councillors voted on Wednesday 13 to three in favour of expanding the bylaw banning smoking in restaurants to also include bars, lounges and private clubs by July 1.
A last-minute amendment also prohibits smoking at weddings, socials and other functions held at private halls.
The hotel and restaurant representatives said they accepted the ban as inevitable, but wanted until next spring to comply.
"The actual bylaw won't be in front of council to vote on until April," Jim Baker of the Manitoba Hotel Association told Global News, "so it gives businesses very little time."
Patrons of the city's two casinos will also have to butt out.
Both Club Regent and McPhillips Street Station fall under provincial jurisdiction but Premier Gary Doer said the casinos would comply with the bylaw.
An all-party committee will also be looking at a province-wide smoking ban.
