PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S. -- A milestone has been reached in the move to ban smoking in public places in Nova Scotia.
Cape Breton is now smoke free.
At midnight last night, the last phase of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality's smoking by-law came into effect.
Smoking legislation in other Cape Breton municipalities became law on January 1st.
Officials with two health boards that cover the Island and municpal leaders marked the occasion yesterday at the Canso causeway with a low-key celebration.
The chair of the Guysborough-Antigonish Strait Health Authority, Coleen Cameron, says in a region that once had one of the highest smoking rates in Canada, it sends a strong message to the rest of the country.
