A young mother who contracts tuberculosis shortly after her daughter is born gets out of the hospital a year later, only to learn the relative who was supposed to look after her baby had given her up for adoption.
That’s the kind of story that haunts Anne Fanning, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Alberta, who has spent her adult life treating tuberculosis and raising awareness of the poverty-related disease.
